Tired of fretting about which flavor of Windows will work best for you? Toshiba's apparently feeling your pain, and is looking to remedy said quandary by tossing in both operating systems with its new 15.4-inch Dynabook Satellite T31. Apparently, the unit includes Vista Business and XP Professional recovery discs, giving the buyer the option when they finally get it home. Specs wise, you'll be looking at a 2GHz Core 2 Duo T7250 on the high side (with a 1.86GHz Celeron 540 on the low-end), as well as optional WiFi, a WXGA (1,280 x 800) resolution panel, 512MB of RAM, an 80GB hard drive, DVD burner and a rechargeable Li-ion good for around 1.3 hours. Additionally, the unit touts four USB 2.0 sockets, Ethernet, PCMCIA, a multicard reader, VGA / S-Video outputs and a FireWire port to boot. Check it out right now for between ¥175,350 ($1,573) and ¥206,850 ($1,856).

Toshiba rolls out SLI-equipped Satellite X205 laptops

Toshiba looks to be doing its best to make it's high-end X200 series laptops even more attractive to gamers, with its latest X205 models sporting SLI graphics courtesy of NVIDIA, among other upgrades. That desirable option is available in both the X205-SLI1 and X205-SLI3 models, each of which pack dual NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT GPUs, with a combined 512MB of dedicated video RAM. Otherwise, you can expect standard HD DVD drives on both models, with a 2.0GHz T7250 Core 2 Duo processor on the SLI1 and a speedier 2.2GHz T7500 on the SLI3. Both models also pack 17-inch widescreen displays, although the SLI3 ups the resolution to 1680 x 1050, as opposed to the standard 1440 x 900 on the SLI1; the former model also comes bundled with a USB HDTV tuner. From the looks of it, you can get your hands on either one now, with the SLI1 setting you back an even $2,000, and the SLI3 running $2,400.

Review

The good: Inexpensive; integrated hot-swappable bay; built-in microphone; solid security features; generous software bundle.

The bad: Middling mobile performance and battery life; cheap stylus.

The bottom line: Though inexpensive, the Portege M400 convertible tablet's middle-of-the-road performance and battery life may not be enough for the demanding business user. For basic tasks, however, it's a decent bargain

Review

The A100 is a great value in the configuration that I tested. It offers performance that will be significantly faster than units in this price range with either shared memory video systems or lower-end dedicated video systems such as the GeForce Go 7300 and 7400 or ATI X1400. With the A100's excellent hardware specifications and the current promotion in Canada offering free Student/Teacher Microsoft Office with this notebook the only other thing a student will need is a carrying bag. Props to Toshiba for making this so easy.
Nothing is perfect, and the A100 does have a couple of areas that could be improved. I think the battery should be a 9-cell unit. Not being able to complete an average length DVD on a single battery charge is a bummer. I also think the keyboard could be stiffer, but that is coming from a confessed keyboard snob.
This is a competitive price range but the A100 is pretty tough to beat.
